Inside: A collection of famous quotes from Frida Kahlo in Spanish and English.

Where to begin on the life and legacy of Frida Kahlo?

Mexican artist, feminist icon, painter, surrealist, and more, she has recently captured the mainstream imagination in a way that would probably have surprised her.

Frida Kahlo led an extraordinary life that included much suffering. Though the body of art she produced was relatively small– and she only lived to be 47– her paintings are instantly recognizable and point to a profoundly introspective and tumultuous existence.

From the Google Arts and Culture page:

“Her work has been celebrated in Mexico as emblematic of national and indigenous tradition, and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form. Mexican culture and Amerindian cultural tradition are important in her work, which has been sometimes characterized as naïve art or folk art. Her work has also been described as surrealist, and in 1938 André Breton, principal initiator of the surrealist movement, described Kahlo’s art as a ‘ribbon around a bomb.'”

In my series on Famous Latinos & Hispanic Americans, I’ve been including quotes, biographies, and lesson activities all in the same post. However, Frida Kahlo is so famous– and there are so many activities for kids out there– that I’m doing a separate post for teachers and parents.

This post will simply focus on sayings from the world-famous artist.
