2. Navidad, Navidad

This alternative is also popular, with much more overtly religious lyrics.

History of the Song Jingle Bells

As much as we love the song Jingle Bells (in Spanish and English!), it doesn’t exactly have a glowing history.

Jingle Bells was written by James Pierpont in 1850, in Massachusetts. It was published in 1857 by Oliver Ditson, under the title “The One Horse Open Sleigh.”

James Pierpont, the nephew of J.P. Morgan, came from an abolitionist family. However, he supported the confederacy and wrote several songs for them. Jingle Bells was purportedly performed at minstrel shows in blackface and was also a drinking song.

The song was actually first performed at a Thanksgiving church service and was never intended to be a Christmas staple, according to Klein. If you listen carefully to the lyrics, you will notice there is actually no mention of Christmas, Thanksgiving or any holiday, for that matter.

The song became associated with Christmas only decades after it was performed on September 15, 1857, on Washington Street in Boston, according to a researcher at Boston University, Kyna Hamill.

Since then, of course, Jingle Bells has become one of the most iconic songs in the world (and the first song broadcast from space!).

You’ll also notice that the more popular Spanish versions change the lyrics to specifically mention Christmas, Christmas Eve, and some include references to the Nativity story. Read on to compare the English and Spanish translations.
